Of course, in order to enjoy dab rigs, the right concentrates must also be available. However, since these cannot be purchased in retail stores in this country, they have to be manufactured in-house. There are several ways to do this, all of which have their own pros and cons. Some of them are even dangerous and should therefore only be performed by experienced people.
The most common extraction methods
- BHO Method: Plant material is placed in a tube or container, which is then slowly filled with butane gas. The butane acts as a solvent to absorb the resin from the buds and leaves. Finally, the remaining butane needs to be evaporated, leaving only that tasty, gooey BHO concentrate. The problem with this is that butane is highly flammable or explosive and can therefore lead to accidents. In addition, if the extraction is improper, residues of the butane can remain in the concentrate, which will ultimately be dabbed along and harm your health. This method should therefore only be used by professionals.
- Co2 Extraction: This process also uses a solvent to absorb the resins, but there are some key differences to BHO. On the one hand, a high-pressure container is required and on the other hand, this method is a lot less dangerous. Co2 is not explosive and is also used in the food industry without hesitation. The only downside is the longer extraction time as Co2 is not quite as effective as a solvent as butane. In terms of health and safety benefits, however, it is a much better extraction method.
- Dry-Ice Method: For this method, a filter bag with a small mesh size is first filled with plant material and dry ice. Due to the extreme cold, the trichomes will freeze and separate from the plant more easily. The filter bag is then shaken vigorously so that the remaining resin is also absorbed. The whole thing can then be transferred to a filter bag with larger meshes to obtain a second sieve. Last but not least, the resin can be easily scraped out of the bags and squeezed. This procedure does not require any solvents and can also be carried out easily by laypersons. The result is 100% natural and therefore completely harmless to your health.
- Rosin technique: Also a solvent-free method that can be operated with little effort and is very popular. All you need are rosin bags, parchment paper and a straightening iron. The material to be extracted is placed in the filter, wrapped in baking paper (or PTFE sheets) and then pressed in a flat iron at low temperature. The result is a terpenes-rich, tasty concentrate that’s easy to scrape off the parchment paper and collect. Bottom line, this is the easiest and best method for extracting plant extracts. It’s easy, safe and very productive – perfect for beginners and professionals.
- Rick Simpson Oil (RSO): This process is named after its inventor and also uses solvents to extract dabbing concentrates – in this case rubbing alcohol (isopropanol). This extract is best known for its medicinal benefits and is therefore often consumed orally. To make RSO, plant material is placed in a container, mixed with rubbing alcohol and stirred vigorously. The liquid is then filtered and poured into a rice cooker. There the whole thing is boiled until all the isopropanol has evaporated and only a fine concentrate is left. Due to the explosive nature of rubbing alcohol, special caution is also required with this method. Using a rice cooker reduces the risk significantly,
All these procedures ultimately lead to the goal, but it is advisable to approach the torture slowly. Beginners should therefore preferably rely on risk-free extraction methods such as the rosin technique or the dry-ice method, as these deliver first-class results without much effort. The solvent-based methods should really only be performed by experienced dabbers who have the necessary equipment and safety precautions.
